International Youth Day 2024 Observed by Sociology Department & Red Ribbon Club

On August 8, 2024 (Monday), the Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Red Ribbon Club, Govt. Aizawl College observed ‘International Youth Day’ at Mualpui Campus. The programme was graced by the Principal, Mr. Lalbiakzuala and Vice Principal (Administration) Dr. Lalsangzuala Khiangte. Both delivered speeches on the importance of spreading HIV awareness and sex education. The 3rd and 5th Semester Major/Core students of Sociology actively participated in the programme by making posters and distributing pamphlets and condoms.
GAC Wins First Prize at ZOHANDCO Inter-College Quiz Competition

Government Aizawl College won the First Prize at the ZOHANDCO 10th National Handloom Day Inter-College Quiz Competition organised by M/s Mizoram Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. (ZOHANCO) during August 6-7, 2024 at Ignite Studio.
P.C. Zomuanpuia, 5th Semester, Political Science Department (Roll No. 2202BA367) and P.C. Lalrinmawii, 3rd Semester, Commerce Department (Roll No. 2302BCOM062) represented the College and won the First Prize carrying a trophy, Mizo shawls, certificates and a cash prize of Rs. 30,000.
On the first night, their opponents were from Govt. Hrangbana College and Govt. T. Romana College; the second night saw them up against their final opponents from Govt. Aizawl North College and Govt. Hrangbana College. They faced 5 rounds consisting of – Question and Answer; Multiple Choice Questions; Buzzer Round; Reasoning Round and then Visual Round. Govt Aizawl College won with 115 points while Govt. Hrangbana College came in second with 60 points and Govt. Aizawl North College came in third with a close score of 55 points.

Awareness Campaign on Environment & Three New Criminal Laws: NSS

The National Service Scheme, GAC Unit organised a one-day “Awareness Campaign on Environment & Three New Criminal Laws” on August 7, 2024 (Wednesday) at the Conference Hall, Mualpui Campus. There were three resource persons, namely Mrs. Vanramchhuangi (Ruatfela Nu), Mrs. Saizampuii Sailo and Mrs. Julie Lalrinzami. Mrs. Vanramchhuangi and Mrs. Saizampuii Sailo were representatives of the Centre for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ), as such they both delivered powerful speeches on the importance of environment protection. Mrs. Vanramchhuangi’s speech was centred on the theme ‘Environment first, development second’, while Mrs. Saizampuii Sailo’s speech focused on the importance of our generation in bringing about restoration. Mrs. Julie Lalrinzami, MJS, Addl. District & Session Judge, Aizawl, on the other hand, brought to the attention of the programme attendees the new criminal laws which has been implemented with effect from July 1, 2024 in India. She highlighted important portions of the new criminal laws in a way that can be understood in the minds of laymen. The programme was attended by the 5th Semester students of Education, History, Political Science and Sociology departments.

Orientation Programme for First Semester MA Education

The orientation programme for the new batch of MA Education (Sem. I) was held on August 6, 2024 at 11:00 AM in
Room No. 501, Academic Building. Dr. R. Lalthankhumi chaired the event and Mr. Lalbiakzuala, Principal and Ms. Lalremruati, Vice Principal (Academics) welcomed the new students and highlighted the important issues related to the college. Mrs. Ngurhmingliani, Head, Department of Education, gave the welcome speech and spoke words of encouragement. Mrs. Zothanchami offered prayers for the new students and Dr. Mary L. Renthlei gave a presentation on the course structure of MA (Education), pertinent academic activities and other important information. To acquaint the new students on the specifics of academic guidelines to be adhered to, Dr. J. Lalhriatpuii presented a topic titled ‘Field Project and Dissertation’, followed by a talk on ‘Presentation Skills’ by Dr. Francis L R Puia Tlau. A total of 21 incoming students and 8 faculty members attended this programme, which was topped off with refreshment in the foyer.

Ms. A. Hmangaihzuali Poonte Retires

Ms. A. Hmangaihzuali Poonte, Associate Professor, Department of English retired on superannuation pension on July 31, 2024. Her retirement was marked by a bittersweet farewell organized by the college Employees' Welfare Association.
Miss Zualteii graduated with English Honours from Pachhunga University College in 1981 and completed her MA in English from NEHU, Shillong in 1983. She began her teaching career at Zirtiri Women's College in July 1984 in the English Department. In July 2000, she was transferred to Government Aizawl College, where she continued to work until her retirement. She lives in Chanmari with her two younger sisters.
At GAC, she set many milestones, the most notable being that she was the first faculty to deliver a lecture aided by Powerpoint slides, on October 8, 2012. Her contributions extended beyond the classroom. She played the pivotal role in establishing the ICT-related systems for the college website, email protocols and official social media channels. With her at the helm, the College won First Prize in the category of Official Institutional Website at the annual Government Online Excellence Awards 2023-2024 conducted by the Dept. of Information & Communication Technology, Govt. of Mizoram. It was under her able chairmanship of the ICT Committee that online classes and online examinations could be conducted smoothly during the pandemic lockdowns. She also took the lead in setting up the first digital Learning Management System of the college.
Miss Zualteii possesses a rare iconoclastic combination of creativity, professionalism and perfectionism, tempered by kindness and generosity. She has extended financial help to numerous individual students as well as student clubs and extension bodies, and her patronage of the Art Club and the Music Club is incomparable.
The College will deeply miss her presence. We wish her continued good health and a happy, productive retired life.
