About
The Youth Red Cross (YRC) unit at Government Aizawl College is the first such unit to be established in Mizoram. The YRS is a dynamic wing of the Indian Red Cross Society, designed to engage and empower young people, typically aged between 18 to 30, in humanitarian service, health awareness and community development.
The Hon’ble Governor, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), President of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Mizoram State Branch presented the institutional membership certificate to the College on July 10, 2025.
Purpose and Vision
To instill the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross Society- Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality in the minds of college students.
To cultivate a spirit of selfless service, leadership and civic responsibility among youth.
To promote health, hygiene and disaster preparedness in local communities.
Activities and Contributions
Members of the Youth Red Cross participate in:
First Aid and Basic Life Support training
Health awareness campaigns (e.g., HIV/AIDS, drug abuse prevention)
Blood donation drives
Relief work during emergencies
Community service projects like sanitation drives, literacy campaigns and youth exchange programs
Celebration of global observances like World Red Cross Day, World Health Day and International Youth Day

On July 10, 2025, the Governor of Mizoram, General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), President of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Mizoram State Branch, spearheaded a significant revival ceremony for the IRCS at the Conference Hall, Mualpui campus. He presented institutional membership certificates to Govt. Aizawl College, the first to establish a Youth Red Cross unit in Mizoram, and Govt. T. Romana College, the second.
Pu H. Lalengmawia, Chairman, IRCS Mizoram State Branch, outlined the organisation’s revival plans and expressed gratitude for the Governor’s support. He stressed ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the Red Cross Society in Mizoram and urged college authorities to establish more Youth Red Cross units to expand the organization’s impact. The ceremony featured a briefing by Dr. Benjamin Lalrinpuia, Joint Secretary, IRCS Mizoram State Branch and remarks by Pu Lalbiakzuala, Principal, Govt. Aizawl College. Dr. Chawnglungmuana, Secretary, IRCS Mizoram State Branch, concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
After the programme, members of the newly formed GAC Youth Red Cross participated in a Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid Training session, the first of its kind in Mizoram. The IRCS Mizoram State Branch also provided the GAC YRC unit with 30 blankets and an oxygen concentrator to support their humanitarian efforts.

On July 10, 2025, 12:30 PM, the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Mizoram State Branch conducted a landmark Sensitization on Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid Training Session at Government Aizawl College, heralding a new era of humanitarian awareness and preparedness in Mizoram’s higher education landscape.
The training was attended by 37 newly inducted Youth Red Cross volunteers, alongside Dr. Vanlalmuana, the faculty-in-charge of the Youth Red Cross unit at the College. Their active involvement underscored the growing enthusiasm among students to serve as frontline contributors to community welfare.
The session featured comprehensive instruction on Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid, led by Pi Lalmuanpuii Hnamte, Demonstrator at RIPANS Aizawl. Her training blended both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical exercises, covering essential emergency procedures ranging from management of Epistaxis (nosebleeds) to techniques for administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This immersive learning experience equipped participants with vital life-saving competencies, fostering greater confidence and responsibility in emergency scenarios.
The program concluded with an inspiring message from Pu Lalngilneia, District Sports and Youth Officer, Government of Mizoram, who emphasized the enduring value and societal benefits of Red Cross services. His words resonated deeply, reinforcing the role of youth led humanitarian efforts in shaping a resilient and compassionate community. The training session marks a significant advancement in the activities of the IRCS Mizoram Branch, laying a strong foundation for future outreach and volunteer-driven initiatives. It is anticipated that this pioneering effort will encourage other institutions to emulate Government Aizawl College’s proactive engagement.
