Workshop on Securities Market & Investor Awareness Programme: Consumer Club

The Mizoram Consumers’ Union and the Consumer Club, Government Aizawl College organised a programme for undergraduate students titled “Workshop on Securities Market & Investor Awareness Programme” on August 13, 2025 (Wednesday) at the Conference Hall, Government Aizawl College, Mualpui campus, Aizawl. The resource persons for the programme were Mr. Prasanta Kumar Mishra, Assistant General Manager, SEBI, Kolkata and Dr. Lalnunmawii Ralte, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, Government Aizawl College.

The programme started at 1:40 PM under the chairmanship of Mr. Thanglura, Coordinator and President, Mizoram Consumers’ Union Headquarters. He introduced the resource persons and welcomed the participants to the workshop. He also informed the gathering about the mission of the Mizoram Consumers’ Union.

Dr. Lalsangzuala Khiangte, Vice Principal (Administration) delivered a short speech introducing the objectives of the programme, highlighting the need for widespread awareness about financial literacy in Mizoram. He exhorted the students to be diligent and hardworking and to be honest in their financial affairs. He also spoke about the need for retirement planning since there has been a massive shift in pension schemes over the past few years.

The resource person Mr. Prasanta Kumar Mishra, Assistant General Manager, SEBI, Kolkata opened his speech with an introduction to the Indian securities market and the role of SEBI as the regulator. He spoke about the powers and functions of SEBI, the types of actions that can be taken to protect the interests of investors and the various initiatives and reforms undertaken through the years since SEBI Act was passed in 1992. He also explained to the students financial concepts like demat accounts, mutual funds and the Do’s and Don’ts of investing in securities markets using an interactive approach.

The second resource person to speak was Dr. Lalnunmawii Ralte, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, Government Aizawl College. She spoke about the need for and the rewards that can come from good financial planning. She taught the students the process of personal financial planning, basics of mutual fund investment, how to set financial goals and how to break down long term plans into actionable goals. She also highlighted the importance of being financially educated and exhorted the students to be aware of their social and political environment as it will eventually affect their financial situation in the future. She made them memorise “5 red flags” of financial scams as well.

The programme closed with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Andrew Lalsangzela, Associate Professor and faculty-in-charge, Consumer Club, Government Aizawl College. Over 150 students from Economics, English and Political Science departments and faculty members were in attendance, gaining valuable insights into responsible financial decision-making. The students dispersed after filling up the feedback form.
