About The Department
The Department of Mizo is dedicated to the study, preservation, promotion and advancement of the Mizo language and its literary and cultural heritage. With five regular faculty members and one casual teaching faculty, the Department fosters a vibrant academic environment where students explore the richness of Mizo linguistic and literary traditions through both classroom learning and experiential activities.
A hallmark of the Department’s academic practice is its study tours to places of historical importance such as Zokhua at Falkawn, Kaphleia Thlan, Sibuta Lung at Tachhip, and the Lungleng Lal In, where students present papers and engage directly with the living history of Mizoram. Regular visits to the Mizoram State Museum and Mizoram University further enhance their learning. The Department also encourages creative and scholarly expression. It has published two student-centered works, namely Ziakfung Khawhar (2019), a collection of prose and poetry written entirely by students, and Rothul (2021), a compilation of papers from a five-day webinar on Mizo drama studies.
Over the years, the Department of Mizo has organized numerous seminars and academic events, including collaborations with the Mizo Language and Literature Teachers’ Association (MILLTA), Rokunga Memorial Society, and the Research, Consultancy & Extension Cell, IQAC. These include national and state-level seminars on themes such as Mizo drama, folklore, novels, and songs, as well as special lectures and career awareness programmes.
In pursuance of the ‘Best Practice’ instituted by the IQAC, the Department practices a structured mentoring system where students are assigned specific faculty members who monitor their academic progress as well as provide guidance for their personal development.
Through its teaching, research, publications and cultural initiatives, the Department of Mizo continues to uphold its mission of nurturing linguistic pride, literary creativity and cultural consciousness among students, inspiring them to carry forward the legacy of Mizo language and literature.
